2014 was an adjusting year for me as it was my first year as a full-time teacher and living in Pocahontas County. Training wise I really hit a strong stretch of training during the January through March time frame as I was planning to race the 2014 Boston Marathon. For a confidence boost before Boston, I headed to Wrightsville Beach to run a test marathon. Things went relatively smooth and easy with the test but afterwards it might have been too close to Boston (month before) and I pulled the plug on Boston due to fear I was not recovered. This turned out to be a good thing as it sort of helped me finally make the transition to some trail racing. My goal was to get my feet wet and learn how to race on the trails and I think I accomplished that. I learned I'm very strong on forest road type surfaces and climbing but have a lot to learn on anything technical or single track. The goal going into 2015 is to try and follow the same method I did last year and shoot for a road race or two over the first few months and than covert over to the trails and ultras for the rest of the year. Unlike last year I want to have a few major goal races to shoot towards with lots of hard training races thrown in between. The great thing with trail racing is that getting out there more often is the best way to learn how to better race on the trails. Recap: Overall it was a decent year for training and racing. Training wise, my streak of 2+ years without missing a day running was snapped in January with an achilles injury. Then again in August/September I missed some more time with a glute/hamstring issue. So I missed close to 2 months of training in 2013 which caused a nice sized drop in mileage. My goal going forward with mileage though is to stay around 60-70 miles a week so the years of shooting for 4000+ miles are probably done.

Racing wise I didn't get to run many races in tip-top form so most of my races were done while building up to bigger races which never happened. Also more then half of the races I did run were done in place of a workout so the effort was far from a race effort. The WS 8K(25:48) to start the year was probably my best race of the year. I did sneak under 16 minutes (15:57 @ Susan Komen 5K) to extend my streak of sub 16 to 12 years. That along with breaking sub 5 minutes in a mile (streak dates back to freshman year of high school) at least once in a year are both fun goals to try and extend for as long as I can.

Recap: I was pretty happy with the 2012 year. Although other then MB Marathon I never ran fast this year, it was the best year of my life as we welcomed our little Clara into the world. It was a challenge to train and race with all the life changes. I even had some well respected friends who are fast dads say I should avoid racing much during this adjustment period. Against that advice I still toed the line and raced a solid amount. Although the results weren't great I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute of it. Most importantly I also figured out I need to make some serious changes if I want to get back to racing my best. So far so good with the changes as I'm actually feeling recovered and not so worn down again as I train and race. Early 2013 results (25:48 WS 8K) show I'm heading back in the right direction so that is a huge positive. My 2013 goals are pretty simple, have fun, train hard but smart, PR at every distance but most importantly the Marathon and at CDR, and last but not least run fewer races. I need to get back to not being so open to run every race that someone asks me to do and put the main emphasis on racing all-out when I do toe the line. My goal is to cut down from 20+ races to more in the 10-15 range. I feel like with 10-15 races I can go just about all-out for current fitness in 5-10 races a year and still have another 5 or so races that are mostly workouts to either win some prize money or support a friends race. I'm looking forward to the upcoming 2013 race schedule. I have a feeling it's going to be a fun and fast year!Jason Pyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17171303328893144010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902313117106417447.post-8202580906530157772012-12-10T07:55:00.002-05:002014-04-24T10:11:35.832-04:002012 Racing Pictures/News Links

Mile-by-Mile Breakdown:
Pre-Race warm up 45minute before Start Gun 2x5minutes slow + Gel #1
1- 5:51 Out relaxed, chat w/eventual winner(Stuart Moran) then watched him go!
2- 6:11 A bit too relaxed..Ran w/friend Brian Floyd who was doing the half
3- 5:45 Time to start cutting down
4- 5:43 Passing runner after runner from the half marathon field
5- 5:39 (29:10) I'm in 3rd Place in the Full Marathon Field
6- 5:35 Gel #2 through Market Square Loop...good crowds
7- 5:39 Get to see many faces heading in as I head out, lots of encouragement!
8- 5:36 Onto Ocean Blvd, headwind is very light
9- 5:34 Constantly reeling in lots of half marathon guys
10-5:46 (57:24) Slowed to get down Gel #3 and extra water
11-5:35 Caught 2nd Place marathon guy
12-5:40 He is hanging tough on my shoulder
13-5:36 See Marian and get a water bottle..she says leader is 2minutes ahead
(Half Marathon Split 1:14.55)
14-5:36 3rd Place on my shoulder is helping push me
15-5:42 (1:25.35) Prettiest section of the course, really focused..I want sub 2:29!
16-5:40 Gel #4 Starting to get hot on the course but I'm feeling strong
17-5:43 Dropped 3rd Place guy on gradual incline
18-5:41 Off the Ocean Blvd, out/back add on section
19-5:37 See the leader at a turnaround..I'm 3+ minutes back...
20-5:43 (1:54.02) Gel #5 (last one), I can run sub 2:29 and PR!
21-5:44 My first sign of trouble, spasm in my right hammy
22-5:50 Hammy is wanting to cramp..have to slow down..
23-6:01 Neg split, sub 2:29 and PR slipping away..keep fighting smartly..
24-6:04 Spasms like crazy it wants to grab bad..avoid major blowup
25-5:59 Fighting for every second between hammy spasms!
26-5:56 GET TO THE LINE!
Finish-69 (2:30:49/5:45pace) 2ND Place Overall
Half Splits (1:14.55 and 1:15.54)

All and all I'm very happy! You always--ALWAYS--want better but I wouldn't change to much. I feel like I'm extremely close to a huge breakthrough in the marathon now. The confidence is back for the event. I'm not 100% sure I'm made to perform my best at the distance but I still think sub 2:25 isn't far off.

I think my best long term plan is to wait anywhere from 12-18 months until running another marathon to be fully ready to reach that breakthrough. I need to get 5K-10K fit again and then try to get under my half marathon PR(1:07.48) before really attacking the marathon. I just need patience, hard work, and of course Gods guiding hand but I will reach my marathon goal!

Such a wonderful event and time in Myrtle Beach. So many friends and support out there this weekend. The list is too long to name everyone that was there to help me along the way before, during, and after the race but THANK YOU again!
Also Marian had a very successful racing year hitting PR's on the roads in the 4mile distance(23:13/5:49avg) and 10K(37:27/5:52avg). She placed third at Myrtle Beach Half (1:22), won the Varmint Half and biggest running honor of the year came when she WON the Cleveland Half Marathon in (1:21.11 /6:12avg) (her 2nd fastest half). She ran the very hilly San Fran Marathon with a very bad foot and extra fatigue which we later found out was due to the most exciting news of the year.

But it can be painful. He knows it and is wonderfully indifferent to it.
He especially remembers running a marathon in Cleveland. "The last four miles were pure pain,'' he recalled recently, noting that cramps in his calf unleashed knife-like sensations through his leg.

As he crossed the finish line that day, he shouted out in agony.

But the rewards far outweigh the occasional discomforts. He not only enjoys the competition but finds it exhilarating to run through Kanawha State Forest at sunrise every day, not missing a single day in 2011 and averaging between 80 and 100 miles a week for the last 10 years. Even on days he describes as "easy,'' he runs 10 miles.

When he begins work as a substitute teacher this fall, he plans to arise at 3 a.m. each day to do his running and get to school on time. After all, he's a morning person and running is a priority.

"It's hard for me to imagine not running,'' he said. "It's something you can feel so good doing. It's just the enjoyment of doing it and how good you feel afterward. Sometimes even in the hardest workouts, that feeling of pushing, pushing, pushing feels good in a way.''

Pyles' passion is something that others shun. Athletes in the more traditional sports generally do it only as a mandatory part of their conditioning and, given a choice, would rather lift weights and stretch. Health specialists continue to emphasize the wondrous benefits of vigorous exercise, but most folks yawn.

The 5-foot-9, 138-pound Pyles, 30, is a Point Pleasant and Marshall graduate who was the University of Charleston's track coach for the last two years but expects to work in Kanawha County Schools in the fall.

Last September, he won the 15-mile Charleston Distance Run in one hour, 25 minutes, 44 seconds and expects to run the race again in September and for many years to come.

He once ran the Columbus Marathon in 2:29 and usually runs two or three marathons a year, as well as five or six half-marathons and races of other distances. He looks forward to them, despite the inevitable pain.

"The last 10 kilometers of a marathon are no fun. It hurts,'' he said. "That last mile of any race is going to hurt. And really the last half of a race may really hurt.''

But he's found ways to cope.

"A lot of it is mind over matter,'' he said. "If you're out there thinking that this hurts or this is hard, it won't be as enjoyable. But you have to keep a positive mindset, even on the roughest days. I just tell myself how truly blessed I am to be able to do it. I pretty much love every moment of it. With running, a lot of it is just staying positive. That's not to say there aren't rough periods and rough times. On the toughest days, not a single step feels good. I have those days where I just put one foot in front of the other.''

The rough times, he said, may be the result of fatigue.

"It might be pushing the envelope a little too much with training and getting a little too worn down,'' he said. "And you can hit periods where it's not enjoyable because your body is really, really worn out. And if you're really competitive, it sometimes can kind of play with your mind a little bit and you start wondering, What's going on.''

On workout days, he often sings songs in his head. On race days, he closely monitors his running pace on his high-tech stopwatch, knowing that running a few seconds too fast or too slowly per mile can have a big effect on his performance. He also knows that falling the slightest bit short of optimal fluid intake can cut two to five minutes off his marathon time.

Growing up in Gallipolis Ferry near Point Pleasant, Pyles showed an aptitude for running at an early age. Instead of riding his bicycle to the basketball court a mile away, he would run, either carrying or dribbling the ball. When the students in his grade school were required to run the fitness mile, he took pride in beating the older kids.

He plans to run the San Francisco Marathon on July 31. The air will be cool and the humidity low. He expects to have a great time.

Reach Mike Whiteford at 304-348-7948 or mikewhitef...@wvgazette.com.
Jason Pyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17171303328893144010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902313117106417447.post-26677945930455896252011-05-26T14:51:00.010-04:002014-11-17T10:00:19.926-05:00Race Pictures

2010 Stats

Good training year but racing wise I never raced up to my training. Most of the 19 races I ran were used as harder workouts but the ones I went in trying to race all out never went very well. The key thing I learned is obviously I wasn’t “ready” like I thought for key races or in the case of Boston just burned out with too long of a build. I feel the #1 thing I learned is I have to train differently to race well.

So from early May to late June I went through a speed phase which to be honest didn't pan out so well. I did during that stretch get on the start line of 4 races ending with a 15:35 5K at the WV Championships and during that roughly 8 weeks probably averaged 80miles a week. Although the phase didn't go as planned it did get the idea back in my head to use more races as hard tempo efforts(or even faster then tempo effort) to have more fun! So after the WV 5K, Marian and me headed to the beach where I logged a very easy going 70mile recovery week and started the 16 week training cycle to Columbus Half the following week.

The focus was to re-develop short tempo running. I used mostly small 5K's to help accomplish this but also had some very solid 4-6 mile Steady State runs out in Kanawha State Forest which ranged from 5:10-5:25 pace feeling smooth. During this time I also had one of my better long workout that was 16miles and included 4mile tempo @ 20:37, 2mile Tempo @ 10:30, and ended with 1mile hard @ 4:55. After that workout I felt even though most of my tempo work was less then 30minutes I was still in a good position to run a huge breakthrough half marathon.

Long story short everything went really well this training cycle and I trained really well and had a tone of fun! But the fact is I failed in my goal race of Columbus Half Marathon, it wasn't from a lack of trying as I was through 4miles in 20:49 and then needed to lock in knowing to hold 5:10-12 throughout a half hurts and isn't easy. I didn't and gave in and the day was over a little after 10K when I started to slip off that goal pace.

The only thing I would change is I needed some longer tempo runs to mentally lock in. When I ran my half PR a couple winters ago the thing I was doing different was long tempo running. I had 3 10mile steady states on a rolling hilly road(Johnstown Road) in 5:25 pace. So I was very fit and strong at the time. I feel I was fitter this build but just never put in the long efforts to give myself the confidence and mental toughness that you need in races over 10K.

I naturally had more speed at that time to go with all the long tempo work. I lost that speed since that time but feel I did re-develop it this cycle so the positive is I'm back on the right track. I know just need to get a good mix of both without going 1-sided with my training focus.

One thing is for sure, I want to run a really good half marathon and marathon. The goals are still big. They might seem pretty far off right now but I can't let that stop me from trying to go after them.

I have no 100% plans as of now for upcoming races. I think it will be a early spring marathon and a late spring half. I'll continue to find little local races and jump in them for fun but since it is about to be a time where very few races pop up I should be able to just lock back in to a good long stretch of training.

I'm going to enjoy this week off, no matter what level of runner you are you have to include a rest/recover cycle to reach higher levels of training in future training cycles. Some people just don't understand that and pretty much run into burnout/stale running/ or just continue to run the same time range year after year. So my running tip to anyone willing to listen is allow your body a regroup period a couple times a year and come back stronger and smarter!

Data
16 week cycle
1415 miles
88.4 average miles per/week
Only 2 weeks under 80miles (drop week for CDR and Columbus)
Entered 11 races and won 10 times including a goal that I never saw happening of winning the Charleston Distance Run 15 Miler.

Races
Independence 5K-15:42-1st
Oceana 5K- 15:49- 1st
Coporate Cup 5k- 15:48- 1st
Thomas Memorial 5K- 15:21- 1st
Logan 5K- 15:59- 1st
CDR 15MILE Champ!!
Pineville 5K- 15:57- 1st
Wine Cellar 10K- 32:09- 1st
Beckley 5k- 16:13- 1st (course according to garmin was 3.19)
Twin Falls 5k- 15:41- 1st
Columbus Half- DNF

Other Races since Boston (during the May/early June cycle)
Blvd 2miler- 10:02- 1st (course mess up so closer to 9:40s)
Beethoven- 15:53- 2nd
Run with a Cop 5K- 16:15- 1st (poured the rain after the first mile which I hit in 4:57)
WV 5K Champs- 15:35- 6th

So in all I toed the line 15 times since Boston. That was a major goal to get out there more and even if just a tempo effort do more races. She can put her thoughts into the perfect words that truly covers all the feelings that goes through our heads! I wish I could write like this but I can't so I will just post what she had to say about the Boston Marathon Race:

I’ve had a lot of time to think about things since Monday’s race. Really, I have a lot to say and very little at the same time. As far as my race went, I’m just not sure what happened. It wasn’t one of those things I could think about at the time and know what went wrong. There’s not one point I can remember where things went bad. I don’t know why I lost it—I just did. I was on my hopeful pace throughout the first 11 miles (I think). I thought I was being so smart running down the fist part of Boston. Maybe I wasn’t as tough as I thought I was—the mentality of putting on your running brakes for the first portion of the course and then finding your groove sounded like something I could do….but I didn’t. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s best not to overthink Monday’s race. Yes—I trained for this race for a long time. And yes, people knew I wanted to do well here. These are things that make it a little hard to take—like a punch in the stomach. But what feels worse is just wanting it for yourself and then failing to come through.

I run for a lot of reasons. I love the sense of joy I get from being outside—just me and the world. I can always count on my body to take me places I couldn’t find without running; and my legs always bring me home. I love the friends I’ve made out on the roads—friends I wouldn’t have without running. I love getting up early in the morning and starting out my day before the sunrise—when it’s still dark outside and the shadows are all mysterious. Yet when the sun comes up everything becomes clear and beautiful. I guess I see running as being sort of like a sunrise. I can go out with a foggy head and not knowing anything—unanswered questions float around in my head all murky and sometimes a little dark and scary. And when I’m done, I realize I don’t need to know anything—because everything will take a shape and shine and I just don’t need to worry.

When I enter a race, I want to do well. Not against anyone else necessarily—but just for the joy of pushing myself. I don’t like to over think anything during a race. I like to go out and push until I have nothing left to give. It’s fun to improve and to reach new heights. It’s easy to think that if you push yourself and give all you have, then you have nothing to be disappointed about. But when you have goals and you miss them by a long shot, then disappointment can seep in. I guess that’s the trouble with putting pressure on yourself—there’s room to mess up. At the same time—I’d not like never putting any pressure on myself. I think I’d just get complacent and I’d miss the joy in trying. It’s funny, something that can bring your mind such clarity can also make you so confused. But you know, what would life be without a little uncertainty? There’s beauty in not knowing. I don’t have to know what went wrong with me to be okay. I’m so lucky to even be able to wonder. I’m happy for any minute I get to run—with the wind blowing by and the air on my skin. I’m not sad about my race now—I just needed a little time to gather my feelings and to put them in writing. Boston was special—the sense of belonging—with thousands upon thousands of runners beside you and even more people showing such support and love for humanity—the world is so much more than yourself. I’m so happy I got to run in the race—and I’m especially happy to have finished. : ) Jason Pyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17171303328893144010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902313117106417447.post-12003594852872047802010-04-15T07:40:00.001-04:002013-11-22T10:46:58.872-05:00"The Boston Build"I started with the Boston Build 24 weeks ago, after taking roughly 2 weeks of very easy running post Columbus Marathon. Things started off sort of rough as far as things clicking and I was actually feeling a lot like I did all last winter/spring through the middle of January with this build. But I kept doing things as close to plan as possible and went into the ING Miami Half at the end of January juts looking to hit roughly goal MP. That day went smooth and things seemed to really come around the months of February/March.

I have done 4 races this build, using two of them as more of a planned hard workout.
1) ING Miami Half Marathon (tried to run close to goal MP) 1:12.38/5:32pace
2) Winter Series 5miler (ran hard to test things on a tough course) 25:49/5:10pace
3) Shamrock Half Marathon, Va Beach (Far off goal but still not a bad day looking back on things) 1:10.34/5:23 pace
4) Joker 4-Miler (I wanted a hard tempo like effort and walked away very pleased especially since I ran slightly longer course due to missing the turn around) 20:19/5:05pace

Probably the most important aspect of Marathon Training out of all the miles, tempo work, intervals, and hills is the LONG RUN. I took the approach of not over doing the pace on long runs. I tried to get them all in easy to steady effort with many/most over hilly loops. In all I covered in the 24 weeks 9 20+ milers which included two 22milers plus one 24miler and 25miler.

Lot's of medium long runs of 12-15miles (that has become close to my normal training run length during marathon phase)
Well the trip started rough when out first flight was delayed then canceled. After much waiting around we we're told that are new flight would leave Charleston at 3pm. So we went home and came back a few hours later to that flight being delayed as well. Things at this point weren't looking good. But luckily it was only a 30minute delay which still put us in Charlotte in time to catch the connector to Miami. But as we got to Charlotte we sat on the run way for close to 45minutes. When finally getting into the airport we sprinted across the airport. 10minutes of running to arrive at the gate with 2 minutes to spare but the doors closed. The lady let us on and said run! We did!! we got on the flight knowing we we're almost to Miami but then we sat on the runway for another 2 hours for de-icing. We finally arrived in Miami around 10:30 and got to the hotel around 11. I hadn't eaten anything but 2 bowls of oatmeal a longg time ago. So I paid the 15 dollars for a turkey sandwich/2 Gatorades ate it and we went to bed closer to 12

Saturday: We woke up around 6am feeling dehydrated and tired. But after some fluid we decided to get our shakeout runs out of the way not knowing what all to expect with plans for the day. We walked out to great conditions (a little windy but felt great). A local runner told us some places to explore and we took off for light runs. I ran for 43minutes looping around mostly water front running places and found a nice gated neighborhood that had a cool little running loop that had many runners and very tall trees/shade. We got stuck by a draw bridge while walking back to the hotel which was neat! We quickly got some breakfast in the hotel restaurant. After all this it was time for me to head over to work the expo. Kendra drove me to the convention center where I walked into the 2nd biggest expo I have personally seen (Chicago is by far the biggest, I’m sure Boston will blow that away this spring). I quickly got to meet @Mattdownin again. Mostly we just have talks on the phone so meeting him in person again was good! Soon @mwreneau was there as well and 6 of us was setting up and working the expo. I was quickly introduced to Arturo Barrios-The first man to break an Hour in the Half Marathon!! I got to meet Michael Sandrock who writes for the daily Camera in Boulder and wrote one of my favorite training books “Running Tough”. Sandrock was running the half barefooted to raise money for Haiti, he also his over the One World Running that collects used shoes to ship to those in need (http://oneworldrunning.blogspot.com/)! I worked the expo from around 10 to a little after two and was on my feet the whole time but thanks to the free pair of recovery socks that @cptdave777 had given to us, Dave Walters was another very nice guy. I left the expo with elite athlete coordinate Miguel who’s driving is a little scary but he got me back to the hotel safely around 3. Quick sandwich and lots of fluid plus a nap and I was back moving around for the 4:45 athlete meeting in the hotel lobby. This things can be sort of intimating but for me knowing I was running anything from just MP to even dropping back to pace Marian I wasn’t too anxious but I could sense Marian was not use to this stuff. The meeting was fairly long but by 6:30 it was time for dinner. Very good past/bread for me, I just want to say @joshglaab plate of food and then 2nd plate of food was the note of the day…the guy was shoveling it in, but it’s much needed running as much and as fast as he does!! Hearing @Elva share some stories made for a great dinner. Around 8:30 we went back to the room to get ready to go to bed. By 9:30 we we’re out!

Sunday: The alarm was set for 2:45 but the safely lock box in the room wanted us up at 2am! The things started going crazy out of nowhere and we couldn’t get it to stop so we laid for 45minutes of beep…beep beep…beep beep beep over and over! 3am we went to the lobby for breakfast which ended up not opening until 3:30. Coffee(only workouts and long runs for me these days) and bagels. By 4:45 we headed back to the lobby to walk with the group to the staging areas. I got to talk with @michaelaish who shared lots of Marathon training advice with me to use for Boston. Very nice guy who has ran in the Olympics so the advice was very nice of him to share with us. The warmup and staging area was the Miami Heat’s arena. But trust me the area we went to is not where D-Wade prepares before games. ONE toilet for about 15 or so guys! Warm up was not needed to warm up it was already 70’s and horrible humidity by 5am. I shuffled around for 15minutes thinking even running Marathon Pace would be rough today. After a while we were in the start area listening to the national anthem and Ryan Hall who was in town gave a quick talk to all runners. Chatted with Micheal Wardian who was running the full(probably his 50th straight weekend of Marathon or longer races)

ING Half Marathon: Well hot/humid from the get-go! I was sweaty crazy amounts by mile 1. That happens when you leave under 20’s and then run in over 70’s and humidity over 90%. But to my surprise (long travels, little sleep for me, on feet at expo, little amounts of food/fluid then needed, etc, etc) my legs felt ok. The plan was simple if I could run my April 19th Goal Marathon Pace of 5:30 I would be more then happy even if it was hard to do. Through 5 it was very easy but feet were burning (sockless racing in Musha equals no-no!). By 10miles I still felt really smooth and honestly easy like it should feel like when I’m fit which I’m not right now but I did see I’m strong from base. I passed the last few runners around mile 11 and then had no one in front of me(that I could see). Looked at the watch and saw 5:28 avg so sub 1:12 for a MP workout in hot conditions! I was happy knowing things haven’t been smooth lately with the workouts I have done. I feel like I have been easy base miles for 10 weeks now! I could have kicked in really hard had I been racing but instead with the feet burning and blood being seen coming through my shoes I figured I’m perfect right now so just finish like this. That actually turned into slowly somewhat as I lost my goal focus and it felt more like just running. Got to 13.1 (by the Garmin) and still had to continue running! So yes I messed up. So in the end I wanted to run 1:12(5:30) my watch showed 5:28-29 but I didn’t think about it being off which I should have known it can be and will be if not running the tangents. So I finished slower then I thought I was on pace for which I’m kicking myself about. I should have known and not lost focus the last 2 miles. I would rather look back and see 1:11.59 for this even though it was just a long/hard workout effort. But anyways here is the stats 1:12.38 for 8th place(6 of top 7 was Team Strands runners) there was 11,257 finishers in the half which makes this by far the largest half marathon I have ever ran in which is cool. Looking at times a head of me makes me feel pretty good that I felt good running this workout, lots of guys that really went for it had rough races. So I’m lucky this was just a hard workout and not a race or I’m sure things might have not gone so smooth for me. (http://results.active.com/pages/searchform.jsp?rsID=89091)

After Race: it was a rush to get out of Miami for early return flight. Long story short since this is a long journal. 10+ hours in airports or in the air and lot’s of junk food (the day to do it). I feel very blessed to have this trip and to get to experience it was Marian and meet great people. Very thankful to God every day for running and all the great places it has taken me and all the great people I have met through it all

The Plan: After a week to regroup and recovery (mostly from travel/lack of sleep) I will have 10 weeks to start hitting the training hard! Not just miles but solid workouts now. I want to run a half marathon tuneup in 4-6 weeks and really go for a big one. Something 1:07-8ish would be the goal so around my PR time. The focus is Boston Marathon but a good hard half is still needed in my book before hand.

Jason Pyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17171303328893144010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902313117106417447.post-47344318986964348712010-01-18T16:49:00.003-05:002010-01-19T07:11:34.711-05:00Team Strands.com partners with Mizuno!1st of many updates on new things happening with Team Strands.com!

Leg wise race was going really well, maybe went out too slow but felt great at the half running in so-so conditions (cold, good wind in the face). Hit half at 1:12.47 and other then a pain that was building in my stomach knew I was going to negative split and felt like this would be my race and huge step. Ran my fastest splits from half to 16 but stomach got bad cramps, still ran a good 17 but the stomach was more then a cramp and I hit the porta potty right after 17split was in/out in 1:12, knew I could make it up and still get 2:24's. But it ended up being the end of the day, every time I tried running 5:25-30 pace I had to go. Stopped again at 19(very mad now), didn't get a bathroom split but it was one of those you wish you could just start the day.(In there longer then first time 1:30-2 probably, doesn't matter). After that I couldn't do it, almost felt like crying because it was out of my hands and legs it was just plain bathroom issues. But hard running made the urge continue to come in. Had to find pace that just got me home, then with 3.2 to go I saw it would only take 18 minutes to still sneak under 2:28, tried one last time and it was same old thing so jogged in for a whopping 19:40ish last 3.2. The worst feeling to run from 19 on at a jog feel when the legs wanted to go. The guy that I had almost caught at 17 finished in 2:25.32 and I had caught him leg wise ready to keep attacking. At the end of the day no matter what happened I finished in 2:29.34 and it has me wanting so much more now. Training will stay the same, the changes I will make is just basic changes to always be slightly different from build to build like some really long runs that I was scared to do this build because I just wanted to stay healthy and put down 2:22-2:24 on paper and start thinking I could one day reach my goal. Boston is the plan, won't rule out a early winter Marathon though. Now it is mental thing that I need to put it down. Last year 1:07 was a mental step the same way close to 2:22 would be a mental thing. (Not so short but after something like this you just want a redo tomorrow) Very blessed to just have the ability to start a race, I don't take that for granted and SOOO excited to see Marian have a solid day and place(2nd overall 1:21.09 PR), she wanted much faster but she will get another half Jan/Feb to prove what she can do. Thanks for all the comments and trust me I don't need to hear this was a good time, I know it wasn't but i do appreciate the nice words people have texted/messaged. Now time to move on, that was my rant...tomorrow starts next phase(rest or possible mini 4 more weeks to see if I can mentally bounce back for something shorter 10k/or Half) Jason Pyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17171303328893144010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902313117106417447.post-21944788001276849262009-09-05T14:44:00.010-04:002014-04-24T10:46:15.389-04:002009 CDR ResultQuick result finished 8th overall, 3rd American, and top WV. Came out with $350(250 for top WV and 100 for special Bob Fleming WV award). Marian was pay out wise top WV money $250 so a nice pay day for two poor part time job workers..lol

Ran 1:22.22 which is 5:29 pace for the tough 15miler. Lost lots of time in the hills(did not run them like I thought I would, ran almost the pace I would run up them in training runs) and beat myself up with a 5:04 fall off the mountain 8th mile. I knew for that mile you have to run closer to goal pace to save the legs and I didn't and I couldn't turn over under 5:20 in the last 7miles of flats. I still think this is close to Marathon Pace type race or since I'm just now bringing in specific workouts I'm hoping it is 5 or so seconds a mile slower then what I run a Marathon at some point this next year or two.

Time was 25th fastest WV time of all time(although it is 4 fastest WV time of the 90's and 2000's). So missed top 20 which I wanted(next year with more earlier workouts under my belt) but mainly missed time goal I had sub 1:21 and sub 1:22. I think I'm strong enough for 1:21 but not enough longer tempo work that makes you tough and fast. #1 goal is Fall Marathon and now it is time to make sure I continue off this solid base I have and turn it into true fast fitness!!

**I had the worse blister problem of my life today. Started feeling them at 10ish, they never got too bad in the race. Nothing that messed with pace just changed my foot landing around a few times the last 5 miles. But huge blood filled blister right below both big toes and running down close to mid foot. Painful now that is for sure.
