Training Log 6/22-6/28 2009

73miles on 7 runs in 7 days:

M: 8miles at Ritter
T: 10miles at Ritter
W: 11miles
T: 10miles at Ritter (Last ritter run while living in Huntington)
F: 8miles on Little Creek Golf Course (Hilly)
S: 10miles at Coonskin(trails, roads, golf course, and Hills)
S: 16miles w/group on CDR course (Hilly)

Recap: Feeling really good about how this week felt and how the training looks to be here in Charleston. Lot's of different stuff to explore and check out. It's probably a good thing getting in the habit of driving to some runs. We will have the Little Creek Golf Course and Park right out our doorstep and I found out this morning that the Neighborhood Loop at the bottom or out hill is really good running when you need nice and flat. But driving to Kanawha State Forrest, Coonskin Park, Danner Meadows Park, and UC office/campus brings so many more runs into the mix! There is a group that meets every day at 5pm for runs from UC and has marked off every 400m split of the 7mile Bike Path Loop that starts at the end of UC and runs through mostly tall-tree lined and river view neighborhoods with very nice looking houses! I will probably blog much more on the local running in the next few weeks with my breakdown of all the areas!

Training Log 6/15-6/21 2009

50miles on 7 runs in 7 days:

M: 5miles with Marian on Va Beach Boardwalk
T: 6miles over Rudee Inlet Bridge
W: 7miles over Rudee Inlet Bridge
T: 6miles on Boardwalk with Marian
F: 8miles back in Huntington at Ritter Park
S: 8miles at Ritter Park
S: 10miles on Johnstown Road

Recap: My first week back to some light running and also first time ever using Garmin 405 watch which was pretty cool experience. I think the combination of moving to Charleston and now logging mileage by counting miles based off GPS instead of Time for easy running will be a good change. Next few weeks I will look to aggressively raise my miles but keep my effort/pace super easy.

S: 20up--5K(15:30s)--20down

Recap: Too much to be thankful for to be disappointed after bad races right now. Training hasn't been too bad this whole year and at times I have hit some really good workouts. Races just have not went well since the Half at the end of January. Marian felt pretty run down these past 4 weeks since Eugene so we both will enjoy our first running break in around 16 months, mine is just going to wait one more week!

5K Championships: Great day, lots of hard work by a lot of people really showed with a big time event! Everyone walked away saying that was awesome! Pat and his group put Huntington races on the map with this great event.

Pyles appreciates a 'home' run

*Got called yesterday for another profile article for the upcoming 5K Championships here in Huntington. I really appreciate the support the Herald-Dispatch has given to me over the year's with many profile articles like this when I would be preparing to go run out of state races. One of the many reasons I will miss Huntington more that I thought, it's starting to hit home as we speak that we have less then 30 days left living in Huntington. Thanks to Pat Riley for continuing to push this race, I think it is going to be a fun time come Saturday!!

Pyles appreciates a 'home' run
June 02, 2009 @ 12:00 AM
RICK McCANN
The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- Jason Pyles of Huntington is excited about running a big distance race on his home turf.
Pyles and his wife, Marian, travel all over for distance runs as members of Team Strands that provides training gear from Puma and covers travel to events for a group of elite runners.
He went to Texas in February for the Austin Half Marathon and recorded a personal-best time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 49 seconds.
In May he was in Eugene, Ore., for the Eugene Half Marathon and took third place overall with a time of 1:11.48.
This week, the Pyles' are staying home for the West Virginia 5K Championship.
"Just roll out of bed and go run," Pyles said.
The West Virginia 5K Classic is Saturday with an 8 a.m. start between 8th Street and 9th Street on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The 3.1-mile course loops around the downtown.
Race director Pat Riley reported 260 pre-registered runners on Saturday and said he anticipates getting many more because runners are notorious for signing up late. Registration continues all week at
www.tristateracer.com and at the United Way office, 820 Madison Ave.
Pyles said the publicity the race is getting and the lineup of runners he's hearing about have raised the level of the event.
"Me and Marian over the last few months have been in Austin, Eugene and Virginia Beach and those were a lot bigger events," he said. "But, for a local race this is big."
The 27-year-old Pyles has won numerous Tri-State distance races including the Huntington Bun Run 5K in 2008 and Ashland Summer Motion 10K (four times).
Pyles and his wife are running Saturday before embarking on new careers as the University of Charleston track and field and cross country head coach and assistant coach respectively.
They both ran for Marshall University. Jason Pyles was also a member of the Thundering Herd men's basketball team for the 2000-01 season. He's originally from Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., and graduated from Point Pleasant High School. Marian (Brooks) Pyles, 25, is from Flat Top, W.Va. She holds several Marshall distance run records.
"Through high school my first love was basketball and thought maybe I'd be a basketball coach," Pyles said. "Once I got into running full time, I realized how much I loved it and quickly saw I wanted to be a coach."
Pyles anticipates a fast pace Saturday morning on the flat USATF-certified course. Riley predicted a winning time of about 14:30 to 14:45.
Eric Putnam is considered the favorite to win. Putnam, the track and cross country coach a Shawnee State University in Portsmouth Ohio, is strong in 5K races, Pyles said. He mentioned Marshall cross country runner Matt Schiffbauer as a darkhorse.
"With the depth of runners that are going to be at this run, I think that first mile is going to be moving," Pyles said. "The 5K is short enough that if you let somebody go, you're not going to catch them."
Marian Pyles shared the 2008 Summer Motion 10K winner's stand with her husband and was also the first female runner in the 2008 Bun Run.
She also ran Eugene (Ore.) Half Marathon and was 28th overall with a time of 1:21.57.
The women's championship Saturday could be up for grabs between Marian Pyles and her friend, West Virginia University assistant coach Jennifer Davis, who was an All-American runner for the Mountaineers.
